Off road trails remain closed in Black Hills National Forest

News Staff - May 14, 2019

CUSTER, S.D.  – Off-road enthusiasts looking forward to getting out in the forest this week will have to wait a little longer.

The Forest Service announced Monday that all gates that typically are opened on May 15th each year, will remain closed indefinitely due to muddy conditions.

In addition, the 750 miles of motorized trails in the Black Hills National Forest have been closed because  wet conditions.

According to Scott Jacobson with the Black Hills National Forest, late spring snow and continuing moisture has kept ground conditions wet.  Trails haven’t dried out and allowing off-road use now would result in resource damage.

Jacobson said the Forest Service will evaluate ground conditions daily.  In the meantime, trails and some roads in the Black Hills will remain closed until drier conditions emerge.
