Officer involved shooting in Rapid City following traffic stop

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City police say a traffic stop led to an officer involved shooting Wednesday evening.

According to police, a Rapid City police officer performed a traffic stop on a vehicle with three people inside on East Highway 44 and Saint Patrick Street.

Police in an evening news conference say a man got out of the vehicle and fired a gun at police, striking a patrol car. Officers returned fire, striking the male subject. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The two other occupants in the vehicle were taken into custody, but police say they were not fully cooperating with authorites Wednesday night.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.

As is standard procedure. the state Department of Criminal Investigation will look into the officer-involved shooting, with assistance from the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.
