RAPID CITY, S.D. – One person is dead after a structure fire Tuesday morning in Rapid City.

According to the RCFD Twitter page, crews responded to North Maple between Adams and Van Buren for a structure fire in the 800 block of North Maple. Occupants of an upstairs apartment called authorities after smelling smoke around 5:30 a.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters immediately began a search and located an individual in a basement apartment, who was taken out the smoke filled building and transported to the hospital. The firefighters performed resuscitative efforts before the individual was transported to Monument Health- Rapid City Hospital where they were later pronounced dead. The name of the deceased has not been released pending notification of relatives.
