Paul Speed

- July 30, 2020

Paul Leslie Speed was born on February 19, 1946, in Sturgis, SD, to Russell and Violet (Young) Speed.  He attended 1st through 8th grade at Stoneville School, and then 9th through 12th at Sturgis Brown High, graduating in 1964.  Paul went into the Army and served in Vietnam from 1966 to 1968.  He was very proud to serve his country and was a very humble man.  He sheared sheep in high school and throughout his college time.  Paul attended Black Hills State until 1972.

In 1969, he met Karen Steffes and they were married on July 10, 1970.  They had just celebrated their 50th anniversary.  They moved to the Chaffee Ranch in 1972 and lived there until 1981, when they moved north of Union Center, where they have lived since.  Paul received his Mason City College of Auctioneering diploma in February of 1980.  He worked at Sturgis Livestock since he was in high school, starting from night man, sorting alley, yard back, and then his life dream of Auctioneer.  He worked for several owners of Sturgis Livestock for over 30 years.  He also worked at Cammack Ranch Supply for 24 years and delivered feed for a short time for ML Feeds.  Paul auctioned for Casteel Auction Service since 1981.  In fact, the last auction he did was for Casteel Auction service in May of 2020. He auctioned the 4-H Livestock Sale for 35-plus years, and was honored at the Meade County Fair for his years of dedication.  He also auctioned a lot of benefits and fundraisers.  Paul worked at the Black Hills National Cemetery from 2005 to 2009, and took much pride in working there.  Paul was honored also by being Meade County Veteran of the Month in February of 2016.  Paul served for 9 years, from 1986 to 1995, as a school board member for the Meade School District 46-1.

Paul loved watching and helping his kids in their sports and activities.  He found so much enjoyment in watching his grandkids in their activities and was very involved in their lives.  In his younger years, he loved to team rope, follow his kids, and cheer on his wife in softball games.  He was very content with being home, having his family around, along with his dog, Willie.

“I drank my tanker full in my life” was a quote from Paul who was sober for 15 years.  We all are so proud of him for this accomplishment, and he was proud, too.

Paul Speed, 74, of Union Center, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2020, at the Department of Veterans Affairs, Fort Meade.
