Pen of Three tough competition at Faith Stock Show & Rodeo

F.Ganje - August 7, 2018

FAITH, SD –  Out in a part of the country known for it’s big skies and prairie vistas, is an industry that shines….cattle.  The Pen of Three show held during the Faith Stock Show & Rodeo draws entries from a 250 mile radius and brings in outstanding cattle, says event organizer Ty Dieters.

“It’s a good chance for producers to bring in their yearly work,” he says. “It’s a fun competition and a good time for guys to get out there and show us what they have.”

Set for Friday, August 10, 2018, registration begins at 8:00a.m., with the show beginning at 11:00a.m. in the livestock barn on the fairgrounds.  Along with bragging rights, champions in four divisions will pick up cash earnings, buckles and more.

“We’ll award buckles to division winners in bull calves, heifer calves, steer calves and bred heifers.  There are coats for reserve placings  and a custom made leather photo album to the supreme pen.” He adds, “The top three places get a cash prize as well.”

Consistency in breeding programs and calf crops is an important part of advancing herd performance and profitability.

“It’s judged on three calves that are to be very uniform.  Judges look at structural correctness, uniformity and confirmation as indicators of management practices at home that result in over-all consistency in the herd.”  He adds with a laugh, “The guys who do this say it’s easy to find a ‘pen of two.’”

Consignments to the show offer producers a chance to see cattle taken straight from pasture.  Both commercial and purebred ranchers use the opportunity to see what level of quality is coming from the country.

Dieters says at pen shows entries aren’t halter broke. “ It’s a no-fit show so you can’t clip them or dress them up. You have to bring them to town in their working clothes,” he says.  “It’s a chance to get your program out there for people to see.  And if you’re a purebred breeder, it’s good advertising.”

A chance to taste some of that home-raised beef is made possible by Merck Animal Health that sponsors a free lunch while judges tally points, with the awards program following.

According to Dieters, the community and region is well represented in the cattle business.  “We do see more and more good, uniform sets of calves,” he notes.  “There’s sure a lot of good cattle that go through Faith.”
