Performance horse events, national competitions lead up to BHSS

News Staff - January 10, 2019

RAPID CITY, SD – If it’s true what they say;  “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man,” then Rapid City will be a good place to be, beginning January 16, 2019.  It’s then when the South Dakota Cutting Horse Association, the National Reined Cowhorse Association and the American Quarter Horse Association hosts what show organizers and Black Hills Stock Show long time volunteer and past board member, Dean Johnson says has become an elite nine-day event – Wednesday, January 16-Thursday, January 24, 2019 - in the horse world.

The  World Series of Team Roping takes place on the first Wednesday – the same day the South Dakota Cutting Horse Association moves into the Event Center.

Johnson continues, “There is an all-around event with the reined cow horse which is a series of four go’s where the first go around is cutting, the second is rein work, the third go around is steer stopping and the final go around is your fence run for the cowboys.”

Single and split combined showing along with double and triple judged formats means quality and performances are as good as can be seen anywhere in the country.  The show, halter, roping, cutting, ranch riding, and cowhorse classes bring up to 3,000 exhibitors and 4,500 horsesto the Kjerstad Events Center at the Central States Fairgrounds.

“No other stock show is doing this,” observes Johnson.  “ In Houston and Denver, their equine event entries are shrinking. The most exciting part about Rapid City is that we could add another week with the amount of interest in these events. That’s phenomenal for our organization. We have a waiting list of organizations that want to be a part of our show.  That is not standard, nation wide.”

Between the AQHA Winter Classic Horse Show, Winter Spectacular NRCHA Show, AQHA Team Roping and Calf Roping Futurities, Johnson – who is a director for the American Quarter Horse Association and the South Dakota Quarter Horse Association – says the Black Hills Stock Show Horse Committee works hard to put the welcome wagon out for horse enthusiasts.

“This event brings a lot of diversified disciplines to Rapid City in relation to the use of horses.  And we’re tying it to the great event we already put on,” says Johnson, who notes there is not an empty stall available at the Kjerstad Event Center during this nine-day run of horse events.

Following is a complete schedule for horse-related competitions – all held at the Kjerstad Event Center on the Central States Fair Grounds - leading up to the official start of the Black Hills Stock Show, Friday, January 25, 2019.
