Piedmont Ambulance Service to end service to Summerset

News Staff - October 11, 2018

STURGIS, SD – Shrinking municipal budgets and increasing costs are impacting area ambulance and fire services.  Recently, in Sturgis, a group of concerned citizens – acting through the Meade County Commission – proposed both an ambulance district and fire protection district to after the City of Sturgis announced those services were not financially sustainable without financial support from county residents not already residing in a fire district.

The Piedmont Ambulance District has found itself in similar circumstances leading officials to notify the community of Summerset that it will no longer serve the community for no charge, effective January 2019.

Summerset residents – two years ago - voted down joining the taxing district that provides over half the operational costs for the Piedmont Ambulance Service.

It’s a growing dilemma; how to fund life and property saving services located within communities, to those who live outside those communities and are not in an established fire district.

In Sturgis, efforts last year, to bring the matter to a vote among Meade County residents failed due to a lack of supporting signatures.  Just this past week, another effort is underway – this one initiated by private citizens –  for the formation of West-Center Ambulance and Fire Districts.  An informational meeting held last week and led by county commissioners and City of Sturgis Administrator Daniel Ainslie had a small turnout. There will be a final public hearing October 25, 2018 where a commission vote to support or reject the citizen-led resolution to form the districts, is expected to take place.

Piedmont Ambulance officials, Summerset Mayor George Mandas and representatives from the Rapid City Fire Department have all been in separate meetings this past week in efforts to identify options for the Summerset community, moving forward.  Among those are a flat rate that is paid up front and a pay-as-you-go model.
