Public invited to see renovations, additions to Sturgis Library

F.Ganje - September 16, 2019

STURGIS, SD –There are few places that embody what a community really is than its public library. As the Sturgis Public Library prepares to celebrate the opening of its most recent renovated space, director Julie Peterson says it has been a work in progress.

“Quite a few years ago, the library board had me look into expanding the program room which turned into talking with the community and figuring out what our role should be in our community,” she shares. “It turned into a joint city/library board project for planning the remodel.”

Beginning at 3:30pm Tues., September 17th, the library will host a children’s book sign-up party.  Then at 4:30pm, there will be a Sturgis Chamber of Commerce Mixer and at 5:30pm, a ribbon cutting and donor recognition.  The renovation of the library includes a new children’s area, 1,000 square-foot community room and s 350 square-foot kitchen and storage area.  The renovation of the children’s area of the library adds space, upgrades, and organization, says Peterson.

“We have expanded the space for the children’s area,” says Peterson.  “It has been well thought out and adds a lot to what we can offer the kids and others.”

The newly added kitchen was built in what had been an outdoor play space on the south side of the library. There will be cooking classes, menu creation, food preservation and more offered through the library or available as a space to the public for classes.   The other central piece of the renovated library is the community room which is large enough to hold 80 people for a presentation or event. It can also be divided to create two, smaller rooms for different events going on at the same time.

“We’ve expanded the program room which was the impetus for the whole remodel.  We needed more room,” says Peterson.  “And we have a kitchen. It’s not a commercial kitchen for public serving. Rather, our plan is to offer classes.  We’re excited about the possibilities with this addition.”

The event is open to the public and Peterson encourages people to stop in.

“We appreciate the public support of the library,” says Peterson. “We’re excited to be going into the future with the options this new facility will provide.”
