RCAS discussing back to school despite a lot of unknowns

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Rapid City Area School Board met last night to discuss options on how to proceed when the new academic year begins.

All board members agree how it progresses will depend on the status of COVID-19 in the area.

The board, meeting via zoom, addressed concerns of a traditional school year, with students and teachers back in the classroom. They also explored ways to implement a hybrid-method of learning, which includes a more robust, yet remote learning platform.

Among the multitude of considerations, a possible late remote start after Labor Day to provide staff with adequate training. Administrators also voiced the need to assess if students are still testing at their grade level due to learning loss from being taught at home.

Officials say conversations with local health professionals, state officials and the mayor will help in deciding next best steps.

A final recommendation will be submitted in July.
