Range Days Rodeo open with Military Appreciation Night

F.Ganje - August 21, 2019

RAPID CITY, SD – The first of three PRCA performances get underway tonight at the Central States Fair and Range Days Rodeo. Between cowboys entered, added money and Burch Rodeo rough stock, there will be plenty of action in the arena, says Central States Fair Manager, Ron Jeffries.

“Burch Rodeo Company, Rozet, WY, does a great job of providing top bucking stock,” says Jeffries. “They have been an important partner in Range Days Rodeo. It helps us draw some top quality cowboys throughout all three performances.”

The first performance is also one that honors the military.

“On opening night of Range Days Rodeo, Wed., August 21st, we celebrate our veterans,” shares Jeffries.  “There is free admission to the fairgrounds and to the rodeo for all active duty and retired military members and their families.” He adds, “We’re thankful to those who keep our country and communities free, day in and day out.”

While the Central States Fair is celebrating its 74th year, its Range Days Rodeo has a much longer history.

“The rodeo is actually older than the fair itself,” shares Jeffries. “It started in the late 1800’s actually.”

Each year, Range Days Rodeo competes with rodeos on the west coast with deep pockets which can affect the lineup of contestants who are chasing points and earnings towards the National Finals held every December.  But this year, in what was a bold move by the Central States Fair, the organization won the inaugural event of the PRCA Xtreme Broncs Finals. Which in turn, changes the dynamics of the regular PRCA performances.

“While Range Days has always been a great rodeo, it will be enhanced this year because of the stock contractors coming for the PRCA Extreme Broncs Finals on Thurs., August 22nd, which in turn attracts more cowboys,” explains Jeffries.  “Those two things will combine to bump up the volume on the Wednesday and Friday night Range Day Rodeo performances.”
