Rapid City Area School Board members continue back to school discussion

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rapid City Area School Board met via zoom on Monday night for their regular meeting, and continued discussions of opening school to in-person learning in the fall.

No final decision was made, but discussion focused on several concerns.

Varying opinions among the board on whether schools should reopen were voiced, as were a plethora of reasons as to why a so-called ‘hyrbid platform’ of learning should be considered if the virus makes it difficult for in-person learning in the classroom.

Also discussed was survey sent out to faculty that asks staff members if they have any reservations about returning to work should classes be held in person.

One faculty member was worried about repercussions should he vote ‘no’ after another district employee said taking leave may roll into resignation.

However, board members dispelled that rumor and said they are more than willing to make accomodations for teachers who are concerned about returning to the classroom during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The board expects to finalize a back to school plan in late July or early August.
