Rapid City Mayor discusses COVID-19 related ordinance; Spearfish passes similar one

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City Mayor Steve Allender talked about the city’s recently passed COVID-19 related ordinance and how the city is already planning on how and when to lift it.

The ordinance puts restrictions on businesses like bars and restaurants that offer on site consumption.

Mayor Allender offered a tip on slowing the spread of virus, saying each household should only send one person for groceries. And after getting many questions about the ordinance from the public, Allender explained it is not a stay at home order, not a closure of all non-essential businesses, and it is not for people to nominate which businesses should be closed.

And, he says if you work for an employer that you believe is putting you at risk, his advice is to “go home.”

Allender said there’s no more responsibility on the part of government than there is on each and every citizen.

Meanwhile, the city of Spearfish approved second reading of their ordinance that puts restrictions on similar businesses.

The ordinance closes businesses of “public accommodation offering food and beverages for on-site consumption,” such as restaurants, bars, coffee houses, clubs, etc., to on-site/on-sale patrons. During this time, the businesses can continue to provide takeout, delivery, curbside, and drive-thru services, using social distancing practices and following all guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The ordinance will also close all recreation facilities, public pools, health clubs, athletic facilities, gyms, fitness centers, theaters, entertainment venues, arcades, bingo halls, bowling alleys, casinos, and other recreational/entertainment facilities during the same timeframe, starting 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, through Wednesday, April 15.
