Road construction season underway in South Dakota

Associated Press - March 29, 2018

STURGIS, S.D. – Just like the saying of there being only two seasons in South Dakota – winter and road construction - three projects in the Black Hills area will impact traffic for much of 2018.

Rehabilitation work on the Haines Avenue and Maple Street bridges on Interstate 90 in Rapid City will impact traffic during much of 2018. Work will start with the eastbound lanes of I-90 on Monday, April 16, wrapping up before the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Construction on the westbound lanes is scheduled to begin on August 13 and be completed by November 16. During this phase, westbound I-90 will be reduced to one lane through the construction zone and the Exit 59 (Lacrosse St.) westbound on-ramp will be closed with a signed detour.

Work beginning Monday, April 9, includes median modifications, lighting, signals and pavement markings to add a second left turn lane for westbound traffic on Catron Boulevard turning left towards Mount Rushmore.

Driving lanes will be reduced to one in each direction on Catron Boulevard in conjunction with the traffic control set up for the city resurfacing project on Catron Boulevard heading west from Highway 16.

Slope stabilization work is scheduled to begin Monday, April 30, on Highway 14A just east of Deadwood. Construction of a reinforced slope below the highway is intended to prevent future settlement of the road at this location. Construction is expected to be complete before the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in August.
