- July 14, 2020

Roberta June (Dodd) Wilburn was born on April 10, 1932, in Struggleville, OK. At a young age her biological mother passed away and she and one other sibling were put up for adoption. Roberta was adopted by Homer and Willie Virginia Dodd and grew up in Paoli, OK. After Roberta finished her education, she went to work for Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville, OK, where she met Lavern Wilburn, and they were married on February 6, 1954. The couple lived in Rapid City before moving to Piedmont in 1967, where they raised their two daughters.

Roberta enjoyed being involved with her daughter’s school activities and often was the driver / chaperone for out-of-town sporting events. She loved high school basketball and has been known to disagree with the referees enough to get a technical called on the team. She was a 4-H leader for many years and guided her daughters and others to excel in the program. During the summers, Roberta attended numerous horse shows, rodeos, and queen contests, and was the best motivational cheerleader anyone could have.

While raising her family, Roberta started exploring different career choices. She became a talented photographer and focused her skills on senior and family portraits. She was also a reporter for the Meade County Times in Sturgis and kept her Piedmont community in the news. After the girls were raised, Roberta started getting involved with owning and managing several businesses. The list includes, the Sluice Restaurant in Spearfish, General Store and Laundromat in Piedmont, and J9 Café and Chute Roosters in Hill City.

Roberta loved her two grandsons. She was always available to sit and have a cup of coffee, enjoy Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and have a conversation about whatever needed to be discussed. She was a master storyteller.
