Rodney Dean Mundt

- June 10, 2020

Rodney Dean Mundt was born in Grand Island, NE, on August 18, 1948, to Ralph and Javene (Riss) Mundt.  He grew up on a farm as the youngest of three brothers, and spent many days ice skating, playing cowboy, and shooting rabbits.  During his sophomore year, he made the varsity wrestling team, which sparked a life-long love of the sport.  Soon thereafter, his family moved to Rapid City, SD, and he graduated from Central High School in 1966.

After high school, Rod began his college education through BHSU.  He joined the military and served in Ft. Hood, TX, from ’71-’72.  After returning to finish his degree in education, he began his career as a Middle School P.E. teacher and football, wrestling, and track coach in Sturgis.  Rod had a passion for athletics, especially wrestling, and was awarded the South Dakota Assistant Coach of the year on two occasions.  “Coach Mundt” was well-liked by his athletes and the dedication and hard work that he put into teaching was evident in the relationships he built with his students.

Rod built a beautiful home in Blucksberg, where he spent many hours admiring Bear Butte and nature’s wildlife.  In his retirement years, you could find him out on the deck chatting with a friend and relaxing with his dog, Harley, or working on the house.  Rod also loved cruising through the Hills on his Harley-Davidson and taking easy drives with the T-tops off his corvette.  He was a collector of many things, including coins, vintage vehicles, signs, and antiques.  Most people remember Rod most for his warm smile, boisterous laugh, and great bear hugs.  He enjoyed taking pictures and telling jokes and loved to tell a good story when surrounded by family and friends.  He was most proud to talk about his children, Amber and Rory, and his 6 grandchildren to anyone who would listen.

Rodney, 71, of Sturgis, passed away on May 17, 2020.

Grateful for sharing in his life are his children, grandchildren, brothers, cousins, and a host of other relatives and great friends.  He is survived by his daughter, Amber (Jesse) Comp and their children, Olivia, Everson, and Mavie of Presho, SD; his son, Rory (Amber) Mundt and their children, Hayden, Max, and Lia of Belle Fourche, SD; his brothers, Don (Kay) Mundt and Wayne (Patti) Mundt; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Rod was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Javene.

Due to the situation with COVID-19, a private family service will be held with military honors, and interment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery.  A celebration of life is being planned for a later date where all can attend.
