SD Department of Health Sunday COVID-19 report shows new high for active cases and 8 new deaths

STURGIS, S.D. – South Dakota health officials reported 658 new cases of COVID-19 Sunday – 148 lower than Saturday, but new cases continue to outpace recoveries as active cases again hit a new high.

The state reports 8,012 active cases – surpassing 8,000 for the first time since the pandemic started.  Hospitalizations went up by 5 Sunday to an even 300. 

Eight new deaths were also reported today – giving the state 323 total deaths, 100 so far this month and 16 total this weekend. The eight new deaths included four men and four women. State officials on their website, SD.COVID.GOV, listed the deaths as one in the 40-49 age range, four in the 50-59 age range, one in the 60-69 age range, one in the 70-79 age range and one listed as 80-plus. There were two deaths each reported out of Minnehaha and Roberts County and one death was reported out of Meade, Bennett, Moody and Pennington. Meade now has 9 total COVID-19-related deaths and Pennington County has 44.

As for new cases, six counties reported new cases in double-digits, including Harding County, who recorded 13 new positive tests. That is the highest daily total for Harding County to date and raising the active number of cases to 27.

Pennington County had the most new cases with 50. The new cases send the cumulative total in Pennington to 3,554 and 789 remain active.

Oglala Lakota had the second most cases Sunday with 24. Oglala Lakota is seeing a spike in new cases and their cumulative total has grown over 100 the past few days. There are 568 total cases in Oglala Lakota and 242 are active. Active cases have increased 23, 22 and 20 over the past three days.

Lawrence County had 21 new cases Sunday and their cumulative total is now 662. There are 166 active cases in Lawrence – up 14 from Saturday.

In Meade County, there are 12 new cases and the cumulative total is 792. Of those, 160 remain active – up 12 from Saturday.

Other new cases West River today include 10 in Custer, 8 each in Fall River and Todd, 7 each in Butte and Dewey, 5 in Tripp, 4 in Haakon, 3 each in Stanley, Jackson and Gregory, 2 each in Lyman and Bennett and one each in Perkins, Corson and Jones counties.

In all, there were 185 new cases scattered across West River, South Dakota.
