PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota High School Activities Association Board of Directors have decided that winter sports will remain on schedule.

During their special meeting Tuesday, the board decided to winter sports will start on time.

The board heard from multiple athletic directors and school officials on the issue.

With no changes, gymnastics and wrestling events can start on November 30, girls basketball can start on December 3rd and boys basketball can begin on December 10.

The board did pass a mtion to recommend that individual school districts implement restrictions on attendance and require spectators to wear masks.

In addition, the board on Tuesday voted to allow those athletes from the state’s Native American schools and are unable to compete in sports due to the pandemic, to work with the association to establish alternatives.

This would give those athletes two options in they wish to play – either compete in a special spring sports league or apply for an additional year of eligibility.

An option was passed earlier this fall that also allows athletes to transfer to another school and play immediately.
