School Board approves strength and conditioning coach, teacher contracts

Gary Matthews - May 13, 2019

STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade 46-1 School Board met for their May meeting Monday night.

Among the highlights was the approval of contracts between the district and its teachers for next year.

Superintendent Jeff Simmons says they are not going to impasse.

"We have reach an agreement with the Meade Education Association and we were able to give the teachers the raise that's coming from the formula that had been put out by our governor and we are happy to be able to give our teachers the raise they deserve."

He says the district was pleased to be able to provide what the Association had wanted.

In other action, the board entered into a contract for services with Scott Benson to serve as strength and conditioning coach for Sturgis Brown High School athletes.

Simmons says the contract was made possible by many groups who have generously donated funds to help cover the cost of the services. The board is also expected to take action in June on a lease between the Meade County Fair Board that will expand their acreage east of Sturgis. That expanded acreage will allow the Sturgis Rodeo Club to move their activities from the Sturgis Fairgrounds to a bigger area near the high school.

Superintendent Simmons also touched on a topic making the rounds on social media – graduation.

A student had asked for permission to wear a National Guard Stole along with her academic stole, but was told the graduation ceremony itself is an academic ceremony and only those types of stole’s are allowed. Simmons says if they deviate from that, then they deviate away from the standard of the practice. But at the same time, he says in no way does the district want to take anything away from other honors during graduation.

The Friday before graduation there is a two hour ceremony that recognizes the achievements that includes and goes beyond academics and recognizes the seniors’ specific accomplishments.
