Sculpture by Sturgis artist Dale Lamphere to be assembled

STURGIS, S.D. – A large sculpture destined for installation across the Big Sioux River in downtown Sioux Falls arrived in South Dakota Tuesday at the home of Sturgis area sculptor Dale Lamphere.

The massive stainless steel arch has been under construction near Denver for months. Lamphere will finish the project this winter in a pasture outside his Sturgis studio.

The sculpture weighs 60 tons and it took six semi trucks to transport it to South Dakota. When placed astride the river in Sioux Falls it will span 285 feet and stand 70 feet tall. The Arc of Dreams is the largest piece Lamphere has produced.

The state artist laureate's previous largest work is Dignity, the Lakota woman that stands along interstate 90 at Chamberlain.

Lamphere told KOTA-TV that he's excited to have the Arc of Dreams in South Dakota for the finishing touches.

"This will give us a chance to really look it over and think about the artistic elements that we're adding in order to complete this piece," he said after a full day on the road with the truck convoy. "All of the main pieces for Arc of Dreams are completed. We've basically created a very fine cake and now we can finish the frosting on it."

The Arc of Dreams is scheduled to be shipped to Sioux Falls and installed along the Big Sioux river next spring.
