Seedstock shows, sales underway at Black Hills Stock Show

News Staff - February 3, 2020

Rapid City, SD --  It can be harder than winning Denver….that’s what many say about cattle shows  held during the Black Hills Stock Show.  And it’s no wonder considering the history of the event began as a way to showcase purebred genetics being raised in this region.  There was no reason for commercial producers to have to travel all the way to the Denver Stock Show when more and more, what was coming out of this region was more than comparable

Throughout the week beginning Monday, February 3rd, producers of 10  beef breeds show and sell in a setting that is different from many other stock shows with a greater emphasis on the commercial connection. Stock Show also has been known to establish a trend in the upcoming spring bull sale production season, in both breed popularity and price trends.

Another added attraction for seedstock producers at the Black Hills Stock Show is the Supreme Row competition.  Throughout the week, livestock judges are selecting champions within breeds.  Supreme Row sets each of those breed champions side by side in the ring, for three  judges to determine the best breed of bull and female, overall.

Seedstock shows and sales are held throughout the week.

The technology side of beef breeding also attracts consignors and buyers from across the country to the Black Hills Gold Rush Cattle Genetics Sale.  This sale offers producers chances at embryos and rights to flush. Angus, Hereford, Charolais, Simm/Angus, Red Angus, Maintainer, Simmental and Club Calf genetics is in the offering.
