Show, sale results from Newell Ram Show and Sale

NEWELL, SD – While rain, mud and show sheep don’t mix, there were few complaints about the much needed moisture that delayed show starts at the 73rd annual Newell Ram Show & Sale held September 20-21, 2018.

The event attracts consignors from eight states and buyers from across the country. For the 2018 event, producers brought 298 consignments. Of those, 185 sold for a total of $114,275.00.

The Supreme Champion Ewe consigned by Annika Bobb, Taylor, ND was a Rambouillet yearling bought by Schalesky Livestock, Faith, SD for $475.00.  The reserve champion came from the Suffolk herd of Dave Pearson, Hettinger, ND, a yearling ewe purchased by Amduson Suffolk’s, Larimore, ND for $450.00

In the Ram division, Chapman Rambouillets, Bison, SD consigned the Supreme Champion, a yearling stud ram bought by Fran Paige, Faith, for $2,650.00.  Reserve was shown by Jon Beastrom, Pierre, SD, a Targhee Yearling Stud Ram purchased by Bob Innes, Gillette, WY for $2,000.

Flying O Sheep, Newell, SD consigned the Supreme Champion Pair of Ewes purchased my Marvin Smith, Sturgis, SD for $700.00, followed by the Reserve Champion Pair of Ewes consigned by Annika Bob that was purchased by KP Rambouillet, Richardton, ND for $800.00.

The Premier Pen of Range Rams was won by Chapman Rambouillets, selling to CJR Ranch LLC, Gillette, WY for $2,700.00.

The Wool Show was won by Jim Forbes (Supreme + Breed) $250, $16,$266; Tate Ollila (Junior + Breed) $75, $8, $83: Cheryl Gehrig (Gary Babb) $100, $100; Iver Paul (Breed SAMM) $16, $16: Everett Paul (Breed SAMM)$8, $8; Renetta Phillippi (Breed Corriedale)$16, $8, $24; Deb Kukuchka (Res, HM, Breed)$150, $24, $174.

In the sale line-up, 185 head averaged $617.70.  Among breeds, the highest totals and averages included eight Targhee rams averaging $1,137.50 and six Prime SAMM Rams averaging $741.67.

High Selling Ewes- Jon Beastrom with his Targhee Yearling Ewe bought by Ray Shepard, Pierre, for $700.00 and Joana Frieze of New Salem, ND, with her Corriedale Ewe Lamb bought by Nicole Marquette of Waverly, MN, for $700.00.

High Selling Ram- Chapman Rambouillet with their Rambouillet Yearling Stud Ram bought by Fran Page for $2,650.00.

High Selling Pen Of Range Rams came from Lisa Surber, Newell, with her pen of two Yearling Targhee Range Rams bought by Jamie Spring, Union Center, SD, for $3,000.00.

High Volume Buyers (in order)were the Olson Ranch, Fran Page, and CJR Ranch LLC.

This year’s ‘Faithful Consignor’ recognition went to Dave Juntenen, Bryant, SD, who has exhibited and consigned at the event for 30 years.  The Youth Ewe Credit Award winners were Lane Jay, Hulett WY and Tamika Eastman, Harrison NE.

Heibertshausen, Alzada, MT, for $550.00; Corriedale Reserve Breed Champion Ewe, Joana Friesz, New Salem, with her Corriedale Ewe Lamb bought by Nicole Marquette, Waverly MN, for $700.00; Corriedale Breed Champion Ram, Phillippi Corriedales (Renetta Phillippi) with her Yearling Stud Ram bought by William McDaniel, Phillip, SD, for $350.00; Corriedale Reserve Breed Champion Ram, Phillippi Corriedales (Renetta Phillippi with her Stud Lamb, not sold.

Columbia Breed Champion Ewe, Steinmetz Columbia’s, Hot Springs SD, with their Ewe Lamb bought by Clayton Maude, Hermosa, SD, for $375.00; Columbia Reserve Breed Champion Ewe, Borcher Sheep Co. Weston & Cassidy Borcher, Powell, WY, with their Yearling Ewe bought by Sheila DeVries, Harrison, NE, for $450.00; Columbia Breed Champion Ram, Don Lawson, Flasher, ND, with his Yearling Stud Ram CJR Ranch LLC for $750.00; Columbia Reserve Breed Champion Ram, Caroline Frampton, Tooele, UT, with her Fall Stud Ram bought by Bill Dirks, Alva, WY, for $400.00.
