South Dakota's inaugural Day of Giving announced

News Staff - October 8, 2018

RAPID CITY, SD – Imagine a day – just one day – where the focus would be on volunteering and donating to a nonprofit.  What would that look like?  In North Dakota, it looked like $10 million dollars…in one day. In Minnesota...$20 million.

The first-ever statewide “Day of Giving” to raise awareness and funds for South Dakota’s nonprofit organizations will be held November 27, 2018.  First organized in 2012 as a nationwide event, the intent is to create a day centered on donations and volunteering instead of shopping and overeating during the holiday season.  Last year’s donations topped more than $300 million.

And it’s not just a day for soliciting donations.  Other ways to be a part of the day is to gift  volunteer hours or days to participating nonprofits.

Kelly Gibson, an organizer for South Dakota’s inaugural “Day of Giving” shares the plan includes connecting nonprofits across South Dakota.  The hope, she says is to get nonprofits thinking about their needs, whether its funding, volunteer work or increased public awareness of their presence and work.

Nonprofits will also have the chance to win prizes for signing up for the day and to participate in one of four regional training sessions, leading up to the “Day of Giving” on November 27, 2018.  The most recent count of participating organizations is 75.  Organizers hope to have at least one nonprofit from each of South Dakota’s 66 counties participate.
