South Dakota COVID-19 cases increase by 40 in Monday report

Gary Matthews - May 18, 2020

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Health reported 40 new cases of COVID-19 in its Monday report.

In the Black Hills area, Pennington County reported 6 additional cases, sending its cumulative total to 58 with 43 active cases.

Over the weekend, the health department issued an advisory for a Rapid Ride transit driver who tested positive for COVID-19, as well as an employee of the Super 8 Motel on Tower Road. The advisory was issued for people who may have been in contact with those individuals to monitor their health.

Meanwhile, Family members of the individual who was diagnosed with COVID-19 from the Super 8 Motel have reportedly stated the individual has since died. Department of Health Secretary Kim Malsom-Rysdon was asked about that today as well and says if the individual did die from COVID-19, it may take up to five days to receive the death certificate. That means today’s death total remained at 44. The motel is currently closed and undergoing a deep cleaning. It’s not known when it will reopen.

Other cases today included 15 in Minnehaha, 6 in Beadle, 4 in Brown, 2 in Union and one each in Bon Homme, Corson, Lincoln, Moody, Sanborn, Todd and Yankton counties.

Active cases today are at 1,199 – down from 1,219 Sunday.

A total of 77 people remain hospitalized today.

2,784 patients have recovered overall, up from Sunday’s 2,724, with 60 newly recovered patients.
