South Dakota Cowboys and Cowgirls punch tickets to National Finals as SDHS Rodeo wraps up

BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. - The top four South Dakota cowboys and cowgirls punched their tickets to the upcoming National Finals as the South Dakota High School Rodeo Finals wrapped up in Belle Fourche Saturday.

The top four athletes in each event get automatic berths to the prestigious National High School Rodeo Finals.

In the Bareback, Jhett Knight of Rushville, Nebraska finished in first and will be joined on the South Dakota team by Cooper Filipek of Rapid City, Jose Alaniz of Faith and Cayden Wolffe of Belle Fourche.

In the Barrel Racing, Piedmont's Wacey Brown finished atop the leader board with 79 points and will be joined at the National Finals by Shantell Brewer of Dupree, Layni Stevens of St Lawrence and Shae Nelson of Hartford.

In the Breakaway, Tayla Thorstenson of Eagle Butte won the event and will be joined by Chantel Kolb of Belle Fourche on the national team.

Two West River cowboys will make it to nationals on the Bull Riding team. Jack Rodenbaugh of Box Elder won the event with 86 points. He will be joined by Custer's Jestyn Woodward.

Two Belle Fourche cowboys made the cut in Boy's Cutting. They are Cain Birkeland, who finished in first, and Brady Labrier, who finished in third. Winner's Brandon Vollmer finished in second.

In the Goat Tying, Mikenzy Miller of Faith took first with 88 points, just ahead of Sawyer Gilbert of Buffalo with 82 points. Dupree's Sidni Ferguson and Martin's Isaabel Risse finished third and fourth and will ensure a strong team for the National Finals.

In the Girl's Cutting, Sage Gabriel won the event with 81 points and Wall's Jayton McKay finished in fourth.

In the Pole Bending, Shyanne Howell of Belle Fourche won first place and her teammate Molly Ryan was third. Custer's Jessica Woodward finished in fourth and will make the finals team.

In the reined cow horse, Kadoka's Jackson Grimes placed second behind Reece Ullerich of Humboldt. Gregory's Blassius Steffen placed third and Winnner's Dawson Phillips was fourth.

In the Saddle Bronc, Cash Wilson of Wall cruised to the top spot with 87 points, with Teigan Clark of Meadow in second. Clint Donaldson of Sturgis punches his ticket to the National Finals with a solid third place finish and Talon Elshere rounds out the South Dakota team with a fourth place.

In the Steer Wrestling, Wyatt Tibbits of Hot Springs won the event with Wynn Schaack of Wall second.

In the Team Roping, the West River duo of Rio Nutter of Rapid City and Body Matson of Sturgis won the event.

In the Tiedown, Tanner Fite of Hermosa won first place and Thane Lockhart of Oelrichs will join him on the national team with a fourth place finish. Blassius Steffen of Gregory took second.
