South Dakota Hog Inventory Up 12 Percent

UNDATED - South Dakota inventory of all hogs and pigs on September 1, 2018, was 1.72 million head, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. This was up 12 percent from September 1, 2017, and up 2 percent from June 1, 2018.

Breeding hog inventory, at 245,000 head, was up 14 percent from September 1, 2017, and up 2 percent from last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 1.48 million head, was up 11 percent from last year, and up 2 percent from last quarter.

The June - August 2018 South Dakota pig crop, at 1.30 million head, was up 9 percent from 2017. Sows farrowed during the period totaled 117,000 head, up 11 percent from last year. The average pigs saved per litter was 11.10 for the June - August period, compared to 11.30 last year. South Dakota hog producers intend to farrow 117,000 sows during the September - November 2018 quarter, up 11 percent from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago.

Intended farrowings for December 2018 - February 2019 are 116,000 sows, up 5 percent from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago.
