South Dakota Primary Election Results

UNDATED – Legislative, school board and city council races highlighted primary election day in South Dakota Tuesday.

Here’s a look at area races:

For legislative races; Gary Cammack won the District 29, State Senate Republican primary and Dean Wink and Kirk Chaffee won the District 29 State Representative primary over Thomas Brunner and Lincoln Shuck. Brunner finished just 95 votes behind Chaffee.

In District 31, Timothy Johns won the State Senate primary, defeating John Teupel 59-percent to 41-percent. The top two voters winning the Republican primary for State Representative in 31 were Scott Odenbach and Mary Fitzgerald.

In a couple of Democrat primaries, Oren Lesmeister won the 28A House Race and Shawn Bordeaux captured the 26A House race.

In the Rapid City area legislative races, Jessica Castleberry cruised to a win over Kevin Quick for District 35, State Senator. David Johnson defeated Janet Jensen in the District 33 State Senate primary. In the District 33 State Representative primary, it was Phil Jensen and Taffy Howard with the most votes. Mike Derby and Jess Olson were the top two vote getters in the District 34 State Representative race. Tim Goodwin and Trish Ladner had the most  votes in the District 30 Representative race, although it was close enough a recount is possible.  Julie Frye Mueller won the District 30 Senate race.

In county commission races, Bob Ewing and Randy Deibert won in Lawrence County and Incumbent Ted Seaman won the District 4 race in Meade County. In Pennington County, Travis Lasseter won a race in District 4. In Fall River County, Joe Allen, Heath Greenough and Les Cope won three seats and Steve Daly won the primary in a race for Haakon County Commissioner. In Custer County, Mark Hartman and Travis Bies won the primary for commissioner at large.

In city council races, John Roberts picked up the Rapid City Council, Ward 4 race, Patrick Jones won in Ward 1 and a possible recount could happen in the Ward 3 race. Jason Salamun has the most votes with 1,355. However, Jerome Wright has 1,294 votes and Chad Lewis has 1,224.  Harold Householder won the Hill City Ward 2 race. In Custer, Todd Pechota and Carrie Moore each finished with 124 votes apiece and a recount will take place there.

In School Board races, Jim Hansen won the Rapid City Area 4 school board race and Clay Colombe won Area 5.
