South Dakota State Track and Field Meet crowns several winners Friday

STURGIS, S.D. - The first day of the South Dakota Track and Field State meet was held Friday with several events holding finals.

While most events held preliminaries with finals Saturday, several field events and relays wrapped up Friday.

At the Class AA meet in Sturgis, Aberdeen Central won the girls 4 x 800 meter relay. Yankton was second. Sturgis came in seventh. In the boys 4 x 800, Sioux Falls Lincoln won first with Sioux Falls Washington second.

Ethan Brenneman of Sturgis captured a championship for the Scoopers -- winning the boys 800-meter run. Ellie Abraham of Brookings captured the girls event.

Lincoln swept the 3,200 meters as Courtney Klatt won the girls and Isaac Mendel won the boys.

Sage Hagen of Rapid City Central was the boys long jump and triple jump.

In Class A, St Thomas More won the girls 4 x 800 meter relay and Haleigh Timmer of the Cavaliers won the girls 800-meter run. Tori Glazier of Custer took second.

Ty Trainor of St Thomas More won the boys 800-meters while Joe Rush of Custer captured the 3,200 meters.

In field events, Jens Christensen of St Thomas More won the boys pole vault and Carolyn Groeger of Lead-Deadwood won the girls event.

Shayla Howell of Belle Fourche won the girls triple jump and Custer's Kellen Kortemeyer won the girls shot put.

In Class B, Delaney Weber of Newell won the girls 800-meter run while Daniel Burkhalter of Bison won the boys 800-meters.

Kyla Sawvell of Wall wrapped up a great season, winning the girls shot put.
