South Dakota Winter Wheat Lagging Averages

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - For the week ending Sunday, there were 5.2 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 4 percent very short, 9 short, 79 adequate, and 8 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 9 percent very short, 24 short, 61 adequate, and 6 surplus.

Corn condition rated 6 percent very poor, 8 poor, 20 fair, 48 good, and 18 excellent. Corn mature was 97 percent, near 94 last year and 96 for the five-year average. Harvested was 25 percent, ahead of 18 last year, but behind 33 average.

Soybean condition rated 7 percent very poor, 8 poor, 24 fair, 47 good, and 14 excellent. Soybeans harvested was 48 percent, well behind 76 last year and 84 average.

Sorghum condition rated 1 percent very poor, 3 poor, 22 fair, 73 good, and 1 excellent. Sorghum coloring was 95 percent, near 98 last year and 99 average. Mature was 90 percent, ahead of 75 last year, and equal to average. Harvested was 25 percent, ahead of 19 last year, but well behind 45 average.

Sunflowers harvested was 8 percent, well behind 30 last year and 32 average.

Winter wheat condition rated 2 percent very poor, 8 poor, 37 fair, 52 good, and 1 excellent. Winter wheat planted was 87 percent, behind 95 last year and 96 average. Emerged was 72 percent, behind 78 last year, and near 73 average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 9 percent very poor, 14 poor, 28 fair, 45 good, and 4 excellent.
