South Dakota records 36 new deaths in deadly COVID-19 update Friday

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota has realized its second-highest COVID-19 daily death toll since the pandemic began as 36 people have reportedly died from the virus.

The new deaths were 21 women and 15 men listed in the 50-59, 60-69, 70-79 and 80-plus age ranges. The most deaths, 23, were in people over 80 years.

The Friday report also indicates another decrease in the number of people hospitalized to 574, but active cases shot back up to 18,407 from Thursday’s 17,884.

New COVID-19 cases across West River totaled 329.

Pennington County added 139 new cases Friday, sending their cumulative total to 7,608 with 2,028 cases remaining active.

Meade County reported 25 new cases Friday, sending the total to 1,541 in the county with 352 still active.

Lawrence County had 22 new cases sending their total to 1,779 with 452 active.

And, Butte County added 4 new cases for a total of 642 with 141 remaining active.

Other new cases across West River include 27 in Todd, 21 in Oglala Lakota, 15 in Tripp, 12  each in Custer and Stanley, 9 in Gregory, 6 in Dewey, 5 in Corson, 4 each in Fall River and Bennett, 3 in Mellette, and 2 each in Ziebach, Perkins and Jones.

There were 3,600 new persons tested reported on Thursday. The new person test positivity-rate is 36 percent for Thursday.
