Spearfish boys, girls down Scoopers Friday night

Gary Matthews & Terry Anderson - January 4, 2020

SPEARFISH, S.D. - The Spearfish boys basketball team won their second game of the year, dropping Sturgis to 1-3 on the season with a 60-57 win Friday night.

Sturgis maintained a three-point lead over Spearfish at the end of the first and second quarter, led by Ryder Ladner's 13 points.

Ladner, however, would injure an ankle in the second half, and the Scoopers weren't the same without him.

Spearfish would outscore Sturgis 34-30 in the second half to get the 3-point win -- led by a big fourth quarter from Jake Powell. Powell drained four three throws down the streth to secure the win, finishing with 20 points.

Ladner led Sturgis, despite his early departure in the third quarter. Marcus Myrick added 10 for the Scoopers.

Meanwhile, the Spearfish girls picked up their first win of the season with a 61-56 win over Sturgis.

Spearfish led 14-12 after one and 31-28 at the half.

Paced by Erin Rotert's 14 points, the Spartans saw Sturgis take a short lived lead after three and then took command in the fourth to outscore the Scoopers 20-13 in the final stanza.

Bella Reid added 12 points for Spearfish and Tayler Duncan chipped in 11.

Sarah Janz led Sturgis with 17 points. Kylie Shaw, back from an injury that sidelined her for the first four games, added 14 points.
