Spirit of May Day is alive and well in Sturgis

F.Ganje - April 25, 2019

STURGIS, SD – When the folks at Affordable Flowers & More in Sturgis put out a call for help to bring fresh flowers to senior citizens in the community to celebrate ‘Senior May Day,’ they had no idea what to expect for a response, says owner Heather Silvestre .

“After checking with the folks at Massa Berry for approval, we determined we would need around 72 arrangements,” recalls Silvestree.  “I put it out on social media to see if folks would be interested in supporting the project. I had no idea the community would jump in as they have.”

She continued “The first 72 were sponsored within five hours.”   With more donations coming in, Affordable Flowers continued to add more facilities and shut-in programs for delivery; Key City, Foothills,  Aspen Grove, Ft. Meade and Meals on Wheels.  As of now, there will be 248 fresh flowers arrangements and deliveries made to senior care facilities and to home-bound seniors.

The idea for a ‘Senior May Day,’ came about when Silvestree and business mentor and friend Eunice Peck were reminiscing about their own childhood memories of May Day.

“We were talking about ways to give back to the community – specifically seniors,” shares Silvestree. “We both love May Day and have fond memories of dropping off May Day baskets on doorsteps as kids.  So we decided to do flowers for seniors on May Day.”

From local support to others  as far away as Canada, Washington, Arizona and Maryland, interest has grown through social media.  Others have stepped up to help as well – from city policemen to national guardsmen.

“There are people coming to help make the arrangements along with others who are writing a May Day card message of ‘Happy May Day with love from the Sturgis Community,’”  says Silvestree. “Chief of Police Geody VanDewater is organizing off duty officers and cadets for deliveries and South Dakota National Guard soldiers will also make deliveries as will people from the community.” She adds, “It will be just wonderful.”

The full-service flower shop will mark its second year in business in Sturgis on Mother’s Day. From live plant arrangements and garden plants, to offering classes such as the upcoming creating lawn art class, Affordable Flowers & More does its part to be a productive and positive addition to the community. Ideas such as ‘Senior May Day,’ are among its efforts to encourage community engagement.

“Many of the projects we do are community-based,” explains Silvestree,  “in that it isn’t geared to grow our business financially.  We did a cost-analysis of course so we would know what would be needed for sponsors but there is no store signage or promotion or financial gain of any kind associated with ‘Senior May Day.’ This is community outreach at its best and the kudo’s go entirely to community and others who are a part of this May Day celebration.”

For now, the focus is on checking in with senior care facilities and home-bound programs ahead of May Day to make sure everyone is included, writing May Day cards, preparing arrangements, and scheduling deliveries.

“Based on the response to the first ‘Senior May Day’ in Sturgis, we’ll plan for an annual event,” says Silvestree.  “We’re hoping that every year seniors can receive fresh flowers and be able to enjoy them.”  She adds, “The response has been awe-inspiring.  How fortunate we are to live in a community like Sturgis.”
