State DOT says in latest report traffic numbers down slightly over last year

Gary Matthews - August 9, 2019

STURGIS, S.D. – A couple of days of down numbers on area traffic counters has dragged down the total count for this year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation says traffic counters placed around Sturgis indicated a 7.3-percent drop in vehicles entering on Wednesday and an 8.5-percent drop on Thursday.

The DOT says 56,204 vehicles entered Sturgis Wednesday and 54,540 vehicles entered on Thursday.

Since Friday, three days have seen an uptick in traffic over last year – Friday, August 2, Sunday, August 4 and Monday, August 5.

The total traffic count so far is 398,318. The DOT says that is point-seven-percent lower than last year.

The DOT will continue to gather vehicle numbers today and into the weekend.

Meanwhile, the city of Sturgis has seen an uptick in the number of vendor permits this year.

As of Friday, the city had received 635 applications for Temporary Vending Permits. That is up 20 from last year on this date.

Trash collection for the year is up 3.2-percent.
