State Department of Health reports two additional cases of COVID-19, testing to pick up

Gary Matthews - March 24, 2020

PIERRE, S.D. – The latest report from the South Dakota Department of Health indicates 2 new positive tests for COVID-19 over the past 24 hours.

Governor Kristi Noem says the cases are in Beadle, where there are now a state-leading 13 cases, and there is community spread, and Brookings County. The new case in Brookings County is traveled related according to the Department of Health.

Noem says the state is still trying to catch up on tests, however, does expect that to get better.

"I was on a conference call with the Vice President going over a lot of the federal response and one of the statistics he gave was that one week ago, 50,000 tests were complete, but now 300,000 tests are complete. That means at the federal level, more of these tests are going through the system and we fully expect to get through the backlog this week."

Noem says some good news, two more people have fully recovered from the virus – bringing the state’s total now to eight.

There have been 790 negative tests so far.

The virus, in most people, usually brings mild to moderate symptoms. But, it can be deadly to older adults and those with compromised immune systems.
