State officials urge citizens to follow guidelines, wear face masks

YANKTON, SD – The spikes in coronavirus infections in southern and western states should be a warning and could be a possible preview. South Dakota State Epidemiologist Dr. Josh Clayton says those types of increases could happen here.

“I think it is important as we’re seeing cases increasing in other jurisdictions,” says Clayton. “We are very close to that kind of transmission event happening in South Dakota.”

Clayton says this round of infections is hitting younger people.  “A lot of what we’re seeing from the increases in southern and western states are in the younger population who are attending events and becoming exposed.”

Clayton says they continue to spread the same message. “We want to make sure we have strong messaging for all South Dakotans and to encourage individuals to take proper precautions and potentially use a face mask in public, especially if they’re going out in crowds.”

Bars, restaurants, beaches and other gathering places in several states are being ordered closed again because of the spreading virus.
