State reports 33 new COVID-19 cases Monday; cluster at Rapid City area nursing facility

PIERRE, S.D. – There were 33 new cases of COVID-19 in the Monday report released by the South Dakota Department of Health.

Of those, 9 were reported in Pennington. The county now has 314 cumulative cases and 181 are active.

Health Secretary Kim Malsom-Rysdon says they are investigating a cluster at a Rapid City nursing home setting.

“The facility is Aventara-Arrowhead. The situation there is that a focus infection control survey was completed by C.M.S., the federal agency, before we did mass testing and found no deficiencies. When that facility completed their testing, one resident was positive. So, the facility did additional testing and found five positives on June 4th. This weekend, an additional 20 new positives were reported between residents and staff.”

She says there are 3 residents hospitalized and remain in contact with the facility and will be conducting additional surveys to provide assistance.

Meade County reported two new cases today, sending the cumulative total to 26 with 11 active cases.

Minnehaha County leads the state with 291 active cases, while Beadle County has 204 active cases.

Other new cases today include 3 each in Beadle, Clay, Davison and Union; 2 each in Codington and Minnehaha and one each in Brown, Edmunds, Hamlin, Hand, Hyde and Todd.

Overall active cases across the state decreased today to 1,003. That is down 35 from Sunday.

The number of people hospitalized currently is up, however, to 92. That is 5 more than Sunday.

The state’s death toll remained at 65 today.

On Monday, 759 total tests were reported. There were 2,095 tests reported on Saturday and 1,602 tests reported on Sunday.
