The new deaths were reported in Buffalo, Faulk and Pennigton counties. The state’s total death count is now 87.

Other new cases around the area include 5 new COVID-19 positive tests in Oglala Lakota and one new case each in Bennett and Todd.

The number of active cases statewide is up 19 today to 800.

Currently, 79 people are hospitalized – down 2 from Wednesday.

South Dakota Epidemiologist Joshua Clayton also reported today the state’s first case of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in a person under the age of 18. The health department would not say what county the individual was from – only that they were from the eastern side of thestate.

The C.D.C. says it’s a condition where different body parts can become inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal organs.

Health experts say they don’t yet know what causes MIS-C. However, the C.D.C. says they know that many children with MIS-C had the virus that causes COVID-19, or had been around someone with COVID-19. MIS-C can be serious, even deadly, but most children who were diagnosed with this condition have gotten better with medical care.
