State reports triple digit increase in number of new COVID-19 cases Saturday

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota saw 103 new positive tests for COVID-19 according to the Saturday update from the Department of Health. Along with the triple-digit increase were four new deaths – two of them out of Pennington County. The other deaths were reported out of Union and Brookings County.

Two of the deaths occurred in the 70-79 year old age range, while the other two deaths occurred in the eighty and over age range.

New cases around the Black Hills area included 7 in Pennington County, however the number of recoveries dropped the active case load in the county down to 109. That is down three from Friday’s 112. The cumulative total number of cases in Pennington is now 818.

Oglala Lakota County reported five new cases Saturday, sending their cumulative total to 146 with 22 active.

Lawrence County and Custer County each reported one new case. In Lawrence County, there have been a total of 27 cases with 2 currently active. Custer County’s total is now 19 with 7 active cases.

There were no new cases reported in Meade or Butte counties. Meade County has 11 active cases – unchanged from Friday. Butte County has 2 active cases, also unchanged from the day before.

The statewide active caseload Saturday is 913 – up 40 from Friday. There are 36 people currently hospitalized due to COVID-19 – an increase of five from yesterday.

The number of recovered patients has increased to 7,820, up 59 from Friday.
