State sees second day of triple digit jump in number of new COVID-19 cases

STURGIS, S.D. – It was another triple digit increase in the number of new COVID-19 cases in Sunday’s report from the South Dakota Department of Health.

Health officials reported 129 new positive tests statewide; 22 of them around the Black Hills area.

Pennington County reported 10 new cases Sunday, sending their cumulative total to 891. The active number of cases are up 5 Sunday to 122. The increase comes after several days of active case declines in Pennington.

In Meade County, another 3 new cases were reported, giving the county 12 since Friday. The active caseload in Meade is up to 26 – an increase of 3 from Saturday.

In Lawrence County, there are also 3 new cases reported. Lawrence County has seen 15 new cases since Friday and their active number of cases increased 3 Sunday to 28.

After reporting no new cases Saturday, Butte County reported 3 new cases Sunday for a total of 17 and 7 of them currently active.

Custer County reported an additional three new cases Sunday, sending their total to 35 with 12 active.

And, Oglala Lakota County reported one new case Sunday. There are currently 24 active cases out of a total of 155 there.

Minnehaha County reported the most cases Sunday with 46.

The statewide number of active cases saw an increase Sunday of 101. There are now 1,125 active cases. There were 1,024 on Saturday — the first time the state has surpassed 1,000 active COVID-19 cases since June 8.

The number of people hospitalized due to the virus was up 7 Sunday to 55. Eighteen of those are in the Monument Health system – up eight from last Sunday.

There were no new deaths reported, leaving the state’s COVID-19 death toll at 146.
