Scoopers vs RCS - Region 4 Playoff

Stevens upsets Sturgis in Region 4 Baseball Playoff

Gary Matthews & Terry Anderson - May 17, 2019

STURGIS, S.D. - On a cold, foggy and misty night, the 13th seeded Rapid City Stevens Raiders upset the fourth seeded Sturgis Scoopers in Region 4 playoff action.

The game was moved to Friday night due to the poor weather forecast for Saturday.

The temperature was 43-degrees at the start of the time, but fog and mist had moved in by the time the game ended.

Sturgis would score first in the game as John Fischer's R.B.I. in the bottom of the first brought home Daniel Walter.

Stevens would answer in the second inning as Tate Sedevie would bring home Tristyn May and Nic Guy would bring home Judge Hutto.

Sturgis would tie the game in the bottom of the second as Carl Nash would get walked home with the bases loaded.

The run that mattered most came in the third inning as Hutto's hit would bring home Porter Wimp to put Stevens up 3-2. That is how the score would stay the rest of the game.

Gage Murphey got the pitching start and went four and one third innings, striking out two and allowing 3 runs. Ryan Garland and Tristan Walter closed.

For Stevens, Joe Bennett successfully got the close, striking out Kelton Olson for the final out, stranding Garland on third base.

Sturgis finished with 10 hits on the night, but Stevens would only allow the 2 runs.

With the loss, the Scoopers wrap up the season and Stevens moves to the Region 4 championship game. They will play the winner of Saturday's Rapid City Central vs Mitchell contest.
