Sturgis Brown High School hosts Freshman Choices Simulation exercise

STURGIS, S.D. – A realistic accident scenario awaited freshmen at Sturgis Brown High School today, as area law enforcement, E-M-T’s and others held the annual Freshman Choices Simulation exercise.

The annual exercise helps community police and EMS responders teach students about the dangers of driving while impaired.

Sturgis Brown High School Principal Pete Wilson says “it really shows them that the choices they make need to be good choices. Poor choices can lead to devastating consequences. It’s really eye-opening and gives them a realistic look of what can happen.”

Wilson says they make the scenario seem as real as it can be.

“A lot of local people help out to make this work. We also hold an exercise the night before for the parents and this year we had about 50 parents and they get to see what the students experience. We even have emergency personnel working on kids, and make-up artists who offer a sense of realism to the victims.”

Organizers of the event say they hope learning through seeing is what hits home for the students.
