Sturgis Council approves annexation of Jackpine Gypsies property

STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis Council on Monday night approved the annexation of the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club property.

The property is located just off I-90 between Exit 30 and 32.

The club has not been in favor of the annexation, stating concerns with property taxes and the possibility they will not be able to continue to conduct their races and other events during the annual motorcycle rally.

City officials, however, say they have no intention of changing the way the Gypsies’ host their events. City Manager Daniel Ainslie says their policy has been to ensure all areas receiving municipal services are a part of the city of Sturgis.

He had hoped to work out an agreement with the club, but two months of meetings have not been fruitful.

An attorney representing the Gypsies’ told council members Monday night that if the city approved the annexation, the group may try to gather signatures to force a public vote on the issue. Furthermore, he says they may file for Class 501c3 status to avoid paying property taxes.

The decision to approve the annexation resolution was 7 to 1 with one abstention.

The Jackpine Gypsies will have 20 days to gather enough signature if they wish to send it to a public vote.
