Sturgis Public Works Department working overtime in hopes of keeping people safe

STURGIS, S.D. – The city of Sturgis knows COVID-19 is a big concern at this year’s rally, and taking the responsibility seriously in hopes of keeping the virus knocked down as best as they can, the Public Works Department is using the early morning hours to go through to clean and disinfect.

In a Facebook post Saturday, the city’s Public Works Department wrote:

“Our first night of “Modified COVID-19” clean up went well. We were able to sanitize all the downtown fixtures and wash down and disinfect the sidewalks and streets.

The Public Works Crews did an awesome Job getting everything cleaned up and ready to go for day 2!!!

I cant express enough what a dedicated crew we have and how well they do their jobs, it is truly a team effort. Nice Job Sanitation, Streets, Water, Wastewater and Parks Crews!

Also big shout out to the Fleet division for not only keeping our equipment going but also the Police Department.”

The Public Works Department must wait until everything on Main Street closes – usually 2:00 a.m. – and traffic leaves, before they can get in and begin to clean.

Officials know they can’t prevent COVID-19 completely, but Public Works Director Rick Bush says they are taking whatever measures they can “to help reduce the risk.”

State health officials say it’s up to each individual to do their part to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. With that being said, pictures from Main Street on the first official day Friday showed motorcycles everywhere, but masks nowhere.

But many who rode their bikes into Sturgis on Friday expressed defiance at the uncomfortable regulations that have marked life during a pandemic.
