Sturgis Rodeo Club updates Meade 46-1 School Board on future land plans

Gary Matthews - March 12, 2019

STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade 46-1 School Board met for their monthly meeting Tuesday night.

The Sturgis Rodeo Club gave board members a presentation on the plan to use property near the high school as a practice facility and a place to host the annual Southwest Regional Rodeo.

Currently the club uses the Sturgis Rodeo Grounds to hold the annual rodeo, but they have been without a practice facility for many of their athletes.

The club is proposing a 99-year lease on the approximately 95 acres east of Sturgis Brown High School and South Dakota National Guard property.

The school will NOT be responsible for scheduling, insurance, maintenance or any other factor as the Sturgis Brown High School Rodeo Booster Club is in the midst of becoming a 501c organization. That will allow the Booster Club to maintain full liability insurance for all activities and individuals practicing on the grounds.

They hope to begin fundraising efforts this spring.

The board last night also took action on the Sturgis Brown High School Roundhouse Roof Replacement, a new garage for the Central Meade County Schools and a cooperative agreement with Newell for soccer.
