Sturgis man enters guilty plea in Rehfeld death case

Gary Matthews & News Staff - September 6, 2019

RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Sturgis man pleaded guilty Friday to aiding and abetting in the death of his former girlfriend.

Jonathon Klinetobe pleaded guilty as part of a plea agreement to aiding and abetting first degree manslaughter.

Before Judge Heidi Linngren, the 30-year-old Klinetobe admitted to being part of the plan to kill Jessica Rehfeld. Her body was found in a remote grave near Rockerville a year after she was allegedly stabbed to death.

Klinetobe was originally charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder for arranging for two men to kill Rehfeld, his former girlfriend. The charge carries a mandatory life sentence.

Klinetobe will be sentenced following five days of hearings commencing Dec. 2 where he now faces a maximum life sentence, instead of mandatory.

Richard Hirth, the last person maintaining innocence, is expected to go to trial in late October. Two men admitted in 2016 to moving Rehfeld‘s body, Michael Frye and Garland Brown, and David Schneider pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in 2017.
