Sunday Update – State DOH says 28 new cases in eastern South Dakota

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Health reported 28 new positive tests for COVID-19 in its Sunday report.

All new cases were in eastern South Dakota; the bulk of them in Minnehaha County, where there have been 104 positive tests. In fact, 23 of the 28 new positive cases were in Minnehaha County. Lincoln County added two new cases, bringing their total to 23. Beadle County, one of the first hardest hit, remained stable with 21 and 18 cases fully recovered.

Numbers also remained stable in the Black Hills area, as Lawrence County remained at 9, Pennington County with 6 and Meade and Fall River County each with one.

In Lawrence County, five people have fully recovered with 2 fully recovered in Pennington. Both cases in Meade and Fall River County have recovered, which means there are no reported active cases as of now according to testing.

The virus has so far sent 22 people into the hospital. That is up from yesterday, indicating some of the newer cases have resulted in hospitalization.

There have been 5,353 negative tests. As of today, the virus has been reported in 47 people in their 20’s, 46 people in their 30’s, 45 people in their 50’s and 43 people in their 40’s.

Four people have died from COVID-19 complications, including State Representative Bob Glanzer of Huron.

In a statement Sunday, Governor Kristi Noem said “I was very sorry to hear of Bob Glanzer’s passing. Bob was a man of true integrity and someone I greatly respected. He epitomized what it means to be a true statesman and worked tirelessly for the people of Beadle and Kingsbury counties as well as for our entire state. Bryon and I will miss him dearly, and we extend our deepest sympathies to Penny and his entire family.”

Glanzer, 74, was a state representative from District 22, which is Beadle and Kingsbury counties.  He had been serving in the state House since 2017.

Governor Noem will ask that flags across South Dakota fly at half-staff in honor of Representative Glanzer on the day of his funeral, which has yet to be set.
