RAPID CITY, S.D. — The South Dakota Attorney General’s Office says a suspect shot by a Rapid City police officer Wednesday evening has died.
The suspect was taken to the hospital with life – threatening injuries after exchanging gunfire with police after a traffic stop.
The routine traffic stop took place around 6:30 p.m. when Rapid City law enforcement stopped a vehicle with three people inside at a Highway 44 intersection.
Authorities say once the vehicle pulled over to the side of the road, a man got out and started shooting at police, striking a squad car. Police Chief Karl Jegeris says officers returned fire and badly wounded the suspect.
Tim Bormann, Chief of Staff for the AG’s Office, confirms the man has died. His identity has not been released as the investigation continues.
The shooting is currently under investigation by the Division of Criminal Investigation. A full report is typically issued within 30 days of an incident, according to Bormann.
