Termesphere art celebrates frontier town

News Staff - April 6, 2018

BELLE FOURCHE, SD – When Bob Helmer wrote down what he hoped would be the direction  taken for the community of Belle Fourche, he couldn’t know that 20 years later his words would continue as a roadmap for the historic community that sits on the northern edge of the Black Hills.

Helmer died in 2016, but his vision and the ongoing work and contributions from others representing the past, present and future of Belle Fourche are all incorporated in the spherical artwork by artist Dick Termes, Spearfish, SD.  The piece was commissioned by Judy Helmer in honor of her late husband.

“Belle of the Ball,” a Termesphere featuring scenes from Belle Fourche’s history, will be dedicated Saturday, April 7, 2018 at the Tri-County Museum and Visitor Center in Belle Fourche. Included in the imagery of the artwork are buildings and characters from the earliest days of the community that was laid out in 1890 at the forks of Hay Creek, the Redwater River and the Belle Fourche River. Many images of the early town of Belle Fourche include historic buildings, the legendary Black Hills Roundup rodeo, cattle and sheep, and the beautiful forks of the Belle Fourche River and Red Water River coming together. The center of the nation is on the bottom of the sphere, as well as many images hidden throughout the piece.

According to Kristi Thielen, Tri-State museum and visitor center director, both Judy Helmer and Dick Termes will offer presentations during the dedication that is free and open to the public.
