STURGIS, SD – Culinary expertise seasoned with a little magic is at least part of the secret potion that makes up delectable pastries, cakes and more at The Good Witch Cake Shop. The newest business addition to the Sturgis community is celebrating with an Open House, Thursday, Nov. 5. Pastry Chef, Shelby Spratt learned her way around cooking in a multi-generational kitchen.
“I have always loved baking. I learned a lot from my Mom and Grandmother,” she shares.
Professional training at the New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, VT, led to a realization that she didn’t really want to be a full-fledged chef. Her interest was more in the line of a pâtissière , the French female version of a pastry chef.
“At the time I wanted to be a chef. But once I got there, I knew I wanted to focus on baking.”
Good friends living in Sturgis convinced the Spratt’s (husband Nathan is a contractor with the VA, working remotely from home, and the kids, Jaden, Zachary, Tristen and Arianna (who is in college) to pull up stakes from Buffalo, WY and set up shop (literally) in Sturgis.
“We have really good friends here. And we thought maybe we should try it here,” recalls Shelby. “ It was our friends influence that got us here though.” She adds, “It’s been going well. Even if It’s been scary to open a business during a pandemic, we’re doing okay.”
The shop, named for Shelby and the family’s enjoyment for the Halloween season, is filled with a variety of pastries, cakes, cupcakes, scones, muffins and tarts. Custom and holiday orders are available as is a lite lunch menu. “Everything is made from scratch. Something other than your typical fast food.”
Located in Boulder Canyon Station, the Good Witch Cake Shop and staff are welcoming visitors to stop by Nov. 5 between 5:00-7:00p.m. to meet the staff and enjoy pastry samples and hors d’oeuvres.
While your outer-self is taking in all the delights to be found in the Good Witch Cake Shop, your inner self may be attracted to the symbolic wisdom and guidance of the tarot cards. The readings are a fun feature to the open house and free.
