Three year trail of stolen cattle unravel for accused man

Associated Press - May 31, 2019

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Theft charges have been filed against a Morton County man accused of stealing cattle.

KXMB-TV says there have been multiple reports of missing cattle in the Brien and Solen areas on the Fort Peck and Standing Rock Indian Reservations in the past three years. And, now investigators believe they've found the man responsible, tracing 22 of the stolen animals to Steven Weinberger.

The investigation began at a livestock auction in Sidney, MT where a brand inspector couldn't match a brand.

Weinberger has been charged with seven felony counts of theft of property. Authorities say the stolen cattle were sold independently to other ranchers who eventually sold the cattle at livestock barns. As many as seven ranching operations weere affected.

Weinberger's preliminary hearing is set for July 1.
