Thrivent Financial and Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity Partner to Help Eight Local Families Obtain Home Ownership

News Staff - March 9, 2017

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Thrivent Financial and Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity (BHAHFH) are partnering in the Black Hills area to build homes alongside eight local families through the Thrivent Builds Homes program. Thrivent members and other volunteers will help future homeowners complete their new homes. To support safe, decent and affordable housing in the Black Hills area, Thrivent has awarded $50,000 to support the completion of these homes. Local Thrivent members will also help raise additional funding.

Habitat homeowners come from different backgrounds and have different stories, but they are all similar in their desire for a safe, decent place to live. Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity partners with families in the local community to provide a “hand-up” in regards to permanent housing solutions.

Thrivent Builds Homes is one of three Thrivent Builds programs which partners the financial, volunteer and advocacy resources of Thrivent Financial together with the affordable housing construction leadership of Habitat. Thrivent Builds Homes focuses on building new homes alongside future Habitat homeowners who will pay an affordable mortgage for their home and will contribute hundreds of volunteer hours and take life skills education. Thrivent Builds Repairs is a program that focuses on helping complete external repairs on existing homes, and Thrivent Builds Worldwide sends teams of volunteers across the country or across the globe to build homes with Habitat families.

Calvin Sievers, a Financial Consultant with Thrivent Financial said, “I am so proud to support Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity through the Thrivent Builds program. I love working for an organization that encourages its staff and members to serve in their communities and provides funding to support that work! Habitat’s mission is one that everyone recognizes and supports. I’m really looking forward to growing our work together in 2017.”

“We are so grateful for Thrivent’s support of our efforts to both build and repair homes in partnership with families working toward strength, stability and self-reliance” said Scott Engmann, BHAHFH Executive Director. “Together, we are helping families and strengthening the community.”

Eight new homes will be introduced to the block surrounding the former Garfield School site at 925 Dilger Avenue, the center of this neighborhood revitalization effort that extends to the edges of the Garfield quadrant (Anamosa/Haines/North/West Boulevard North.) The former elementary school will be renovated and repurposed by developer GBA, Inc. into loft apartment units.

Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity is an ongoing partnership between Thrivent Financial and Habitat for Humanity. From the national partnership’s inception in 2005, Thrivent Financial and its members have now committed more than $226 million and more than 5 million volunteer hours. This has resulted in thousands of families and individuals living in safe, decent and affordable housing as well as hundreds of communities banding together to make a positive impact. In 2017, Thrivent has committed nearly $14 million to support the Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity partnership, along with thousands of Thrivent members and other volunteers who will provide their hands and their hearts for construction.
